Modern endodontic procedures are similar to having a filling, and most patients have minimal or no pain afterward. Here is how to take care of your tooth.
Each patient's tooth is different. The following are general guidelines for our patients. When in doubt, call us at 770-478-6878.
The tooth and surrounding tissues can be tender or sore for several days. It is normal for the tooth to be pressure sensitive for about a week.
You can take Aleve (Naproxen) one in the morning and one in the evening (every 12 hours), OR up to three tablets of 200 mg Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) every six to eight hours. On top of Aleve or Advil you can also take one tablet of Tylenol (Acetaminophen) 325 mg or Extra Strength Tylenol 500 mg, 3 to 4 times a day. Try the lowest dose possible first. Do not take any medication on an empty stomach, and do not apply external dry or moist heat to the area.
In most cases antibiotics are not necessary after treatment. If you develop swelling, fever or severe pain, you may need antibiotics; please call our office to obtain a prescription unless you were already given one. Take antibiotics or pain medication with food unless told otherwise, and take an over-the-counter probiotic with your antibiotic prescription.
Do not chew on the tooth for several days after treatment, and avoid anything sticky or hard on this tooth. Have a permanent restoration placed by your general dentist within six weeks from the completion of your root canal treatment.
If you cannot contact us for any reason, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room or urgent care facility. You can reach us at 770-478-6878.
Our team would rather hear from you twice than have you worry once.
