Apicoectomy / Endodontic Surgery

Although there are many surgical procedures that can be performed to save a tooth, the most common is called apicoectomy, or root-end resection. Endodontic surgery involves the surgical removal of the tip of a tooth root and the subsequent sealing of the root canal.

Apicoectomy is generally recommended in cases where root canal treatment has failed to remove infection or inflammation in the tissues surrounding the tip of the root. In most cases, a second root canal procedure, called retreatment, is considered before resorting to apicoectomy.

However, in cases where retreatment is not a preferred or viable option, apicoectomy is the only alternative. Failure to perform apicoectomy may result in infection and may lead to loss of the tooth.
